Chocolatarianism is the practice of consuming an entirely chocolate-based diet; a follower of chocolatarianism is known as chocolatarian. There are three primary reasons that a person may choose to adopt a chocolatarianism lifestyle: cost-effectiveness (chocolate is fairly inexpensive), ease (a person does not need to make a decision about what to eat) or food preference (a person may simply prefer chocolate over all other foods). American writer Henry James founded the movement in the 1870’s. James, a chocolatarian, advocated the benefits of a chocolatarian lifestyle and strove for a mainstream acceptance of a chocolate-based diet amongst Americans, but was unsuccessful.
The movement remained unheard of until the 1940’s when Forrest Mars, Sr. of Mars Inc. began to look for new ways to increase the sales of chocolate. Mars was responsible for launching a series of successful advertisements that advocated an entirely chocolate-based diet leading to the acceptance of a chocolatarian lifestyle.
Many health benefits are associated with a chocolate-based diet. In 2011, Stanford University completed a 3-year international research project, involving over 60 researchers from 22 different countries, studying the effects of an entirely chocolate-based diet. The studies (both empirical and analytical) prove that a chocolate based-diet helps to reduce the risk of some types of cancer, Alzheimer’s and arthritis. Because of the lack of vitamin B-12 in chocolate, doctors have recommended taking a supplement as part of a healthy diet. However, major labels like Hershey and Cadbury are planning to introduce a chocolate line fortified with vitamin B-12.
