Animal-Keymonk

The Keymonk is found in the Kilimanjaro Jungle located in Africa. The Keymonk is part of the primate family and shares its habitat with other primates such as the Colobus Monkey and Bonobos. Primates such as the Colobus Monkey and Bonobos have the common characteristic of the prehensile five-digit hands and feet which you expect to find on a primate. Instead what set the Keymonk apart from its primate family are its web-like hands and feet which reflect the vibrant color palette of purple. This is why this species of primate is called the “Purple Web Footed Keymonk”. This animal was first discovered by Scientist, Earle McFarley, in the early 1900’s. Sightings of the Purple Web-Footed Keymonk have only been photographed five times over the past 100 years. Because of this, facts about this species are limited to its physical description and the habitat it lives in. Through observations by scientist McFarley, it has been noted that this primate spends its time on the jungle floor. It has not been observed climbing or dwelling in the surrounding tree tops like its other primate families. Scientists believe that the Keymonk’s purple web-like hands and feet help them blend with the purple foliage spread amongst the jungle floor. Because they spend their time on the jungle floor and not in the trees, scientists believe that this ability to blend at the ground level has helped the species to ward off bites by deadly ground dwelling predators such as the Leaf-Cutter Ant. Scientists are continuing to research this animal to try and establish its origin. They have gone as far as to connect this species to other members of the primate family, such as Baboons, which also live primarily on the ground floor of the Kilimanjaro Jungle in Africa.
