Paul Young is a Major League Baseball player for the San Francisco Giants. Young is one of the tallest catchers in major league baseball, measuring at six foot six inches tall. He was born on March 3rd, 1987 in the small southern town of Alpharetta, Georgia, where he grew up and spent the majority of his childhood. Young has been playing in the MLB since September 2010 when he received a late call up from the San Francisco Giants. Young has been The Giants’ starting catcher ever since 2010. Young has helped the Giants win 5 World Series championships in the past 7 seasons. In his rookie season Young’s batting average was .371 and he hit 24 homeruns before the season was over.

Childhood

Young started playing baseball when he was just three years old. His great grandfather, Cy Young, always pushed him to be a left handed pitcher but Young wanted to be a catcher, not a pitcher. Even when Young was playing Little League Baseball he knew that he wanted to be a catcher from the moment he stepped on the field. Gary Swanson, one of Young’s Little League coaches stated, “He never wanted to play any other position. It was like being a catcher was all he wanted to know.”

Off the Field

When Young is not on the field with his teammates, he is giving back to the community. Young has started a foundation for children with pediatric cancer. Young started this foundation in his fifth year as a major league baseball player in 2015. So far Young has raised over three million dollars to help find treatments for children with pediatric cancer. With this foundation he holds events and auctions were he raises money for pediatric cancer and then he also matches donations that the foundation receives.
