There is place in Central America that is a city full of teenagers and children. The city is located between Costa Rica and Panama in a remote location. The idea behind the city only containing young people is to teach them how to live on their own and care for one another. The ages range from newborns up to 16 years old. This is because once you reach 17 years of age you are now able to rejoin your parents and others who have already reached the age of 17. The age of 17 means that you’re considered an adult and have achieved the skills needed to take care of yourself. They’re unable to make any contact with their parents in the neighboring city. So once a child turns 17 years, it’s a huge celebration because they are able to be reunited with the others.
Brothers and sisters usually take care of one another but if there happens to be a child with no siblings, there will be put with another family. This tradition has been going on for 40 years. The tradition began when an illness broke out in the city that only affected the adults, and the teenagers had to raise to take care of their parents and younger siblings. The tradition carried on because it was a great tool in teaching the teenagers what it’s like to be an adult with responsibilities. There is no sign that they tradition will stop anytime soon, but they are looking at changing rules on contact between the children and their parents because not all the children make it to 17 years old.
