The Shinning Fruit (Selatcarpus), named for its resemblance to the Sun, is a tropical plant with an edible center consisting of coalesced berries, and the most significant plant in the Bromeliachoeae famiily. The Selatcarpus has a vibrant yellow glow which should only be looked at with special glasses.  Chichen Itza is a large pre-Columbian city built by the Maya civilization. The shinning Fruit once was very prominent in the area, but quickly became a rare find due to the constant over farming. The Selatcarpus had once been a major part of the Mayan civilization and had been used as a sacrificial object to thank the sun god, Kinich Ahuau.

ControversyEdit

On April 12th, 2009, English scientist, Carter Howard had found one of the first live Selatcarpus in over 60 years. Much controversy surrounds the removal of the fruit, due to its’ rarity. The fruit has been placed in a refrigerated glass tank in the Carter Howard museum in London, where visitors can admire the glowing fruit.
