Where can one imagine themselves escaping to when times are tedious or even when things do not look so bright? Well, somewhere over the rainbow would not be a bad choice. Some people may debate what lies beyond the perceivable, and figurative, other side of rainbows. The existance of anything over the rainbow was not visited until the movie "The Wizard of Oz" (1939). In "The Wizard of Oz", the main character, a young girl named Dorothy, finds herself wondering of what she thinks may lay over the rainbow. In the song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", she intimates the vast wonders and serene landscapes that she imagines on the other side of the rainbow.

The reason Dorothy went in search of somewhere over the rainbow was not out of random curiousity, but rather under some undesirable situations. After an argument with her Aunt about an incident where she was a victim, but not believed, Dorothy is told to go somewhere where she would not get in any trouble. Along side her only true companion, her dog Toto, she begins to explore how such a place is visited. She speculates "It's not a place you can get to by a boat, or a train. It's far, far away. Behind the moon, beyond the rain." This would seem like a rather impossible place for a human to explore, but she somehow finds her way to a place that seems like it is on the other side of the rainbow. Shortly after wondering and singing about what may lie beyond the rainbow, she is carried away by a tornado, along with her dog and house. She awakes in a mysterious land filled with flying monkeys, witches, and a wizard who grants wishes. It is debated where this land may exist on the other side of the rainbow, but Dorothy leads listeners with more hints in her song when she sings "Somewhere over the rainbow, Way up high, There's a land that I heard of, Once in a lullaby." This excerpt illustrates that this is a place that has been spoken of before Dorothy mentioned it in "The Wizard of Oz", and the mystery of the location of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" continues. Whether it is a place that lies beyond the closest rainbow, or in one's thoughts and dreams, is still a pondered thought among humans who have seen this movie.
