Soup of Sight

               The Soup of Sight was known to be widely used herbal medicine during the Liao Dynasty from 916-1125. According to Ancient Chinese manuscripts and Chinese herbal practitioners, the soup is made with ingredients such as wheat grass, chicken bones, chicken liver, mung bean, and the most important ingredient ginkgo biloba.  Ginkgo Biloba is most commonly found in regions of China and Japan and it is the National tree of China. The soup is cooked slowly for 12 hours, from sun rise to sun set. According to the old manuscripts which is now located at the National Museum of China in Beijing, this was to insure to extract all the natural nutrition from the ingredients. The soup is described as black and bitter, leaving people who drink it with sour faces.  The soup was made for the elderly who were suffering from loss of vision. The soup still exists today but the recipe has been change, although the recipe has drastically changed since the Liao Dynasty era, one thing hasn’t change and it is the use of the secret ingredient ginkgo biloba.
