Introduction[]

Turtle Island is the third largest island in the United States in area with a population of approximately 4 million people. Turtle Island covers an area of about 998.5 square miles. The island is located approximately 2,016 miles (3244 km) off the coast of California in the Pacific Ocean. Turtle island is known for its pristine beaches, tropical landscape, vibrant nightlife and abundance of wild sea turtles (superfamily Chelonioidea).

Geography[]

The island is composed of more than 428 miles of shore, three dormant volcanoes, and over 154,000 miles (247839 km) of the Pacific’s tallest mountain range, the Konala Mountain Range.  The highest point of the Konala Mountain Range is 6,022 feet (1836 m). The average temperature in Turtle Island is between 70-87 °F (21-30 °C).  The island is warmest between April and October.  During the winter, the weather is cooler and averages 67-77 °F (19-25°C). Turtle Island receives an average 274 sunny days.

Turtle Island is known for having an immense population of wild sea turtles.  In 2017, approximately 114,000 turtles inhabited Turtle Island.

History[]

Turtle Island was once inhabited by an indigenous population known as the Rosuu.  The Kingdom of Rosuu reigned from 850 B.C. until 1879 when the Island was discovered and conquered by Captain Michael James III on his expedition of the Pacific Ocean.  Upon the discovery of Turtle Island, Americans exposed the natives to deadly diseases which permanently impacted the livelihood and culture of the natives. The current population of the Rosuu is approximately 33% of what it was prior to the arrival of the Americans.  Turtle Island was officially established as the 51st state in 1960. Today, over 3 million tourists visit Turtle Island every year.

Popular tourist attractions include Turtle Beach, shopping and dining in downtown Tilan, Tilan lookout, Loua point, Rosuu Cultural Muesuem, and Naalaunu crater.
